SELECTING THE BEST ERGONOMIC CHAIR

When selecting an ergonomic chair, it is important to remember that there is no one “best” chair for everyone. What fits one person may not fit another; a chair that’s comfortable for one person may be too stiff for another, etc. Top ergonomic functions to look for include: Adjustable height, lumbar support, arm height and back support. All of the chairs on this site were selected for superior ergonomic support and adjustability.

ERGONOMICS 101

The word "ergonomic" can be used to describe almost any product without recourse. As a result, the term has been overused and watered down. Bottom line, ergonomics is serious business, and product claims and functions should be supported by serious research and testing. These questions and answers will help you identify genuine ergonomic furniture products and clear up some misconceptions.

What makes a chair truly ergonomic?

An ergonomic chair moves the way the body moves, freely from task to task, offering optimal support. The chair provides a personal fit, neither too big nor small. It conforms well to all body shapes and sizes without constricting or confining and has a neutral effect on body temperature. A real ergonomic chair must have a minimum of 6 adjustments, which include: pneumatic seat height, tilt/recline mechanism, tilt/recline tension control, different sizes or seat pan depth control (one size doesn’t fit all), adjustable lumbar support and adjustable armrests. Many of the more advanced chairs have up to 12 different adjustments.

Do ergonomic chairs help with back pain?

Absolutely. Back pain can be the direct result of sitting with poor posture for days, months and years in a non-adjustable, inexpensive model. Lower back pain can be relieved with lower lumbar support, which helps fill the void in the curvature of your back and promotes an upright posture. Continual slump of the spine can contribute to disk problems. Upper back pain is usually associated with what experts call “floating arms.” A chair with adjustable height an d angle armrests supports the muscle groups of the neck and shoulders, prohibits stress and fatigue. An improperly sized chair will restrict blood flow and cause the buildup of lactic acid in your muscles, resulting in discomfort. Designed for efficiency and safety, an ergonomic chair allows for movement and regular position changes to prevent musculoskeletal distress and promote circulation.

Why are ergonomic chairs more comfortable?

Our bodies were designed to move. In fact, movement more than anything else, increases blood flow and oxygen, keeps your joints lubricated and flexible, improves circulation and removes waste products from the muscles. The industry's new mesh technology produces seating that forms to your body shape for ultimate support. It allows for airflow around your body to dissipate heat and prevent buildup of lactic acid in your muscles.

Which are the best ergonomic chairs?

The Herman Miller Aeron Chair has won the most awards and is critically acclaimed; it has revolutionized sitting and changed peoples’ lives. The Steelcase Leap Chair has held the #2 position for the last couple of years and is now being challenged by Humanscale’s new Liberty Chair.

How much do I need to spend for an ergonomic chair?

An entry-level chair starts at around $400 and tops out at around $1400. Our suggestion is to spend at least $800 if you want the really good stuff.

How can I make my workspace more ergonomic?

Proper placement of the workspace components (i.e., keyboard, mouse, monitor and copy holder) will naturally encourage users to assume safe, comfortable postures. Most important is the location of your keyboard. It can’t be too high or too low. We always suggest using an adjustable keyboard tray that allows for the proper angle of your wrists. Here are some important steps to follow: Situate the monitor at or below eye level, with eyes in line with a point on the screen about 2 to 3" down from the top. Center the monitor (an arm's length away) and keyboard directly in front of you. Align documents with the keyboard and monitor.

What is "neutral posture" sitting position?

Neutral posture occurs when you are sitting properly in an ergonomic chair; you'll be surprised by the difference it makes in your productivity and comfort. Follow these steps to achieve neutral posture: With your feet flat on the floor, adjust the pneumatic height of your chair so your knees are at a 90-degree angle and your thighs are parallel to the ground. Adjust your armrests so your shoulders are in a relaxed position and your elbows are at 90-degree angles. Now distribute your weight evenly and adjust the lumbar support accordingly.

Can I prevent carpal tunnel syndrome with ergonomic accessories?

A 1995 Cornell University study found that using a lowered keyboard holder on a preset tilt, away from the user, could help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. The user's wrists need to remain straight, with elbows open up to a greater-than-90-degree angle. This keyboard position encourages a healthier seated posture as well. Also, resear chers overwhelmingly agree that the top line of text on the monitor should be at or slightly below eye level. That's because any portion of the monitor above eye level contributes to neck and shoulder strain.

How often should I adjust my ergonomic chair?

If it's been over a month, it's time to take a minute and make sure your chair is doing the whole job it was designed to do; check the adjustments and make sure they’re still set properly.

Does more adjustability mean more ergonomic?

Definitely. While the ability to adjust is a critical component of most ergonomic products, workers may unwittingly adjust themselves into bad postures or not use the adjustments at all. We always suggest reading your chair’s manual to learn how to properly adjust your high-end ergonomic chair. Many companies supply highly adjustable ergonomic chairs to their staff without training. If you’re confused about how your current chair works, we suggest that you call one of our sponsored web stores.
